Water Engineering

The SuperFloc for cost effective purification of water

Introduction

Millions of people from all over the world are drinking water contaminated with pollutants such as iron, fluoride and arsenic. Drinking this type of polluted water regularly can negatively effects people’s health. Causing for instance stomach– and skin problems. But also can result in high blood pressure, headaches and diarrhea. Water contaminated with arsenic is the worst of all: consumption leads to cancer and a significantly increased mortality rate.

The Super Floc: effective removal of contaminants out of drinking water

The SuperFloc is a new and innovative system purifying drinking water from this types of contamination. Iron, fluoride, arsenic and turbidity can be removed as well as bacteria, viruses and protozoa. The SuperFloc  can be easily operated, is running on solar power, uses and delivers up to 10.000 litres of purified drinking water per day.

Proven technology

SuperFloc systems already have proven their worthiness in the States of Uttarakhand and Orissa, India leading to enthusiastic reactions and repeat orders. We also can supply you with official laboratory tests results indicating that mentioned contamination’s are effectively dealt with.

How the SuperFloc works

Polluted (source) water is routed through an electrolysis cell and automatically mixed with small concentrations of coagulant/flocculant. Pollutants react with these chemicals forming flocs having a higher density that water. The flocs sink down and are removed using an automatic valve system. Bacteria, viruses and protozoa are removed using a small dosing of disinfectant. The refilling of (harmless) chemicals is easy and is only needed once every 4 to 6 months.

Cost of operation and maintenance are largely reduced

Energy cost for operating the SuperFloc are extremely low due of the usage of solar power. Operational cost are further reduced because for operation of the system local caretakers can be hired. It is no longer needed to find and hire a expensive technician to do the job.

Saving the environment

Running on solar power, the SuperFloc produces no air pollution and no carbon fuels are needed to power the operation. The flocs in the waste water do not contaminate the groundwater and do not pollute the environment because they are inert.

Focusing on community- and village scale water purification projects

Given the capacity of the SuperFloc to deliver 10.000 litres of clean water per day, the system is best applied on community-/village scale projects. Our customers collaborate with (local) Governments, NGO’s and large organisations often having incorporated clean water provision in their CSR strategies.

Income generation using a water ATM and online monitoring

The extended versions of the SuperFloc incorporate a water ATM system allowing consumers to contribute in cash to the water purification. This can result in long term financially sustainable solution which is most beneficial to all stakeholders. Also the option of online monitoring is offered making it easy to track  the water production using a mobile phone.

UV WaterBox

Usage

In tropical countries people mostly drink polluted sweet water from lakes, rivers and ground wells. This water often has a bad taste, is contaminated with fine silt and is loaded with harmful bacteria and viruses. It is clear that this type of water seriously impacts the health of especially children, elderly and pregnant woman.

The solution

We developed the UV WaterBox for communities ready to battle water problems and purify water easily. The simple device uses a strong UV lamp to kill harmful bacteria and viruses (up to 99,99%). Additional filters reduce bad taste straining out fine grain- and silt material. The energy to power the UV WaterBox lamp is obtained from a solar panel. The system is independent of the local grid, can easily be installed, is operated and maintained by a local workforce. Especially suitable in remote places.

Benefits UV WaterBox:

Cleans and purifies contaminated water easily

Low operational costs: 0,0026 euro/liter

Is mobile and transportable; suitcase size

Is easy installed and operated; no moving parts

Is powered using a solar cell; independent of grid

Water Production

On daily basis 5.000 to 10.000 liters water can be purified dependent on the size of the WaterBox. The UV WaterBox therefor can serve 1.600 – 3.200 people with clean safe drinking water, considering one person consuming 3 liters of fresh water per day.

How it works

The core of the WaterBox is a UV lamp in a RVS tube. When the UV lamp is on, the contaminated water is routed through this RVS tube in which UV rays are abundantly present. The rays effectively kill 99,9 % of all the bacteria and viruses present. After the UV treatment the water is safe for consumption. The energy needed to power the UV lamp is obtained from a solar panel. A small battery is added to make sure that the Box operates even when no sunlight is available.

Additional filtering

The effect of the UV treatment is maximized through the usage of 3 simple filters to remove dirt, silt and sand from the source water. The filters also reduce bad tastes and odors, improving the quality of the output water considerably.

Reverse Osmosis

Usage

Saline water can be purified Reverse Osmosis (RO) Technology. This technique is well established and broadly applied. We applying the technology ourselves in the water shops project we are operating in India. The systems we provide are engineered and based on this experience.

In order to assess which system is best suitable, we normally advise our clients first to examine the feed water in a certified lab. Once it is clear which contaminants and minerals are present in the water source, it can be rapidly assessed what the configuration of the needed RO system should be to deliver the high quality drinking water needed.

Operations and Maintenance

Reverse Osmosis systems can not do without proper regular Operations and Maintenance. The membranes need to be flushed on daily basis, (dosing) pumps have to be checked regularly as well as the need for chemicals to improve the PH, alkalinity etc.

Applying RO systems ourselves extensively, we can support you with practical schemes to improve the O&M and increase the lifetime of the RO system delivered.

Target Groups

In regions were salinity of the water increases 500 TdS and clients are interested to improve the water supply using RO technology. We normally facility clients:

In villages, on islands and far off locations;

Hotel and Eco-lodges;

Small to medium communities, hospitals and schools;

Water shops;

Emergency & aid situations.

Production

The production of fresh water ranges from 1 m³ to 10 m³ per hour. Upon request larger RO’s can be designed.

Technology

Using state of the art membrane technology  removes not only salt but also microbiological impurities. Using state of the art pumping technology and a unique system controller which reduces the energy consumption. The energy needed can be provided using solar panels. The applied techniques are tested and proven.

Benefits RO systems:

Durable and robust purification of saline water;

Can be operated independent of electrical grid using solar power;

Up to 10 m³ of fresh clean drinking water per hour;

State of the art technology, robust and secure.

Rain Water Harvesting

Rain Collection And Purification system (RainCAP)

MultiSpectra Aqua

Usage

The Rain Collection And Purification system (RainCAP) is a foil sheet tank that is made of sturdy and durable plastic sheet material. The foil tank is installed in the ground and used to collect/capture up to 70 m³ of rainwater. Once needed for consumption, the water is pumped up from the foil, purified and distributed as drinking water to the consumers.

The RainCAP foil structures can be easily transported, installed and maintained. It is often installed in combination with our UV WaterBox. The foil tank can be cleaned from the inside and removed if needed.

Benefits of RainCAP

• Simple, flexible and durable solution;

• No problems due to settlement and cracking of concrete

• Delivers high quality drinking water;

• Low labor-, transport- and material costs;

• A lifetime of 8 years or more;

• Easily transported, cleaned and replaced upon demand.

Target group and delivery

The RainCAP is designed for usage in tropical counties with modest to high rainfall. We focus both on family level (from 5- to 15 m³ tank) and on village level (tank size 15 – 70 m³ each). The tanks follow a modular design and can be linked to each other dependent on your needs.

The 15 m³ tank serves an extended family of 30 people for 8 months consuming 2 liter p.p./ day. The 70 m³ tank serves a village of 200 people drinking 2 liter p.p./ day for almost 6 months.

Dimensions of the foil tanks

• The 15 m³ tank (for families) ranges 3,2 meter in diameter and extends 2,5 meter deep into the ground.

• The 70 m³ tank (for villages) has a diameter of 5,0 meter and ranges 4 meter into the ground.

Rainwater Catchment area

Capturing rainwater is best done using existing roof systems. Schools, medical centers and governmental buildings can be often deployed for that purpose. Rainwater gutters alongside of the roofs collect the rain falling down. The RainCAP system is attached at that point to take care of the filtering, storage and purification of the water.

The total of the collected rainfall is dependent on the condition of the roofs, the gutters and the level of maintenance in combination with the local rainfall pattern.

Limitations

The RainCAP system is best applied in tropical regions displaying moderate to high rainfall. The systems can be installed in relative soft ground (compacted sand, silts, etc.). It is advised to avoid sharp rock surfaces in order to prevent puncturing of the foil material.

Technologies used

The foil tank system is manufactured using strong and durable plastics. Collected water can be stored for a period of up to 8 months dependent on the level of maintenance.

RainCAP XL for large scale rainwater harvesting

MultiSpectra Global

The RainCAP XL is used store large volumes of rain water for agriculture- and or drinking purposes. Up to 500-2.500 m³ of rainwater can be stored this way using a combination of sturdy foils-sheets and Geotex materials. If designed well, up to 2,5 millions liters of rain water can be captured per unit and multiple units can be installed if sufficient ground space is available.

Preventing leakage and evaporation

A major advantage of RainCAP XL technique is that water losses due to leakage and evaporation is reduced to zero. In the summer season these losses result in evaporation of water and a decreasing depth of the pond with up to 1 cm per day ( 1 meter per 2,5 month). These losses can be prevented using using the RainCAP XL solution capturing  rain water between foils and storing it long term.

How we work

Dependent on the usage and need for water it is calculated what the minimal catchment area to capture a sufficient volume of rain water. Then roofs made ready to be utilized and self-cleaning rain water filters are installed to remove dirt particles from the water. If roofs are not available, land surface catchment can also be considered, leveling the ground space to route the water to the location were the RainCAP XL structure is installed.

Using the captured rainwater for human consumption?

If the collected rain water is applied for agricultural purposes, water quality is not so much of an issue. If the captured water is however utilized for human consumption,  we strongly advise to install an eco-friendly UV WaterBox filtering system. This system, running on solar power,  takes out 99.99% of the bacteria, viruses and protozoa inevitably coming down with the rain water.
